The room is named for…

Dr. Robert, as he was affectionately called by his many patients and friends, loved people and always treated his patients without regard for their ability to pay. He began his medical practice in 1930, following his graduation from the Medical College of Virginia. In 1945, Dr. Robert and his wife, Evelyn, achieved their lifelong ambition of starting their own hospital in Galax.  Waddell Hospital was closed in 1973 to allow Twin County Regional Hospital to be built. Waddell Nursing Home, begun in 1965 as part of the hospital, has expanded and remains active today. All four of Dr. and Mrs. Waddell’s children entered the medical field.

In May 1962, Mr. Ralph H. Hagy gave this rhythmic commendation for Dr. Waddell which sums up the love and appreciation the citizens of Galax felt for this man:

I can think of no one person, so genial, kind and true;
As Dr. Waddell was to me, and would be to you.

I am sure that in the end, when the final run is made;
The admission to his room upstairs will be already paid.
