Dr. Robert C. Bowie started his chiropractic practice in Galax in 1930.  Shortly thereafter he was arrested for practicing medicine without a license.  He was unable to be tried because they could not find enough people to serve as jurors who had not been one of his patients.   He was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates from 1944 thru 1946 and pushed through legislation to insure that chiropractic care be recognized as a bona-fide medical profession.Dr. Bowie cared deeply for the City of Galax and served as Mayor from 1950 until 1952.  He was instrumental in establishing the Fiddler’s Convention in Galax.  It was often said that when he sold his practice in 1982, you could compare his x-rays and files over the years to the phone book and they appeared to be one in the same!  His prices remained low and patient friendly charging only $7.00 for an adjustment and $4.00 for an additional family member at the time he closed his practice.

Dr. Bowie loved to play croquet and could often be seen playing on the lot next to his office.
